*** First Friday ***

Jesus saw Peter and Andrew fishing and invited them to follow him. They left all and gradually came to know him as the Way, the Truth and the Life. We too have received the same invitation. But we know that there are many "ways" of following in his footsteps, of practicing devotion to the Sacred Heart.

Jesus taught his disciples to pray out of the goodness of his Heart. The time we spend in Prayer and in Reading the Bible can help express the longings of our own hearts and help us to know him better.

On the night before he died, Jesus gave us the great gift of the Eucharist. The Mass is still the central way for us to honor his Heart, and Holy Communion is still the best way to nourish our own spiritual lives.

After Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, he asked us to follow his example, an example of Forgiveness, of Love for the Poor and of Concern for Justice. Each day we have many opportunities to take up our crosses and learn meekness and humility of heart from him.

We call that Friday on which Jesus died "Good." From earliest times, Christians have kept all Fridays as times of self-denial. Even now when we no longer abstain from meat, the Bishops ask us to make Friday a special day of Penance. And on the Feast of the Sacred Heart and each First Friday, we have added reason for sacrifice.

We honor Jesus when his Image in our home or in our hands reminds us and those around us to love as he loves us. Sharing the Bible, a pamphlet or a picture may draw others closer to him. And Speaking of God as we know him in our lives, continuing to tell the story of how he has loved and blessed us, is one of the most powerful ways to draw the people we know to the Sacred Heart of Jesus-our Way, our Truth and our Life.
