I was led to the priesthood because of a strong desire to do the best thing I could with my life. From about sixth grade on, this meant being a priest.
My first contact with the SCJs was through a publication that I picked up in grammar school. From reading about the SCJs and meeting Fr. George Pinger, SCJ, I was immediately impressed and wanted to be a part of their religious community. Fr. Mike Noonan, SCJ and Br. Jim Willis, SCJ were also important influences on my vocation in those early days at the minor seminary. My classmates also encouraged and inspired me - many are also SCJs today.
For me, being an SCJ means helping the downtrodden, those that others either cannot or do not want to work with. It also means supporting others in religious life by living, praying and working together with a common vision of the Kingdom of Christ. I have found my life with the Priests of the Sacred Heart over the years to be really fulfilling and challenging. I find them to be a friendly family that seems to get along together and mutually support one another.
Being an SCJ gives me a feeling of belonging to something bigger than myself. It also motivates me to bring the love of Christ to all the people I touch, no matter what form of ministry I am involved with.
A native of Chicago, Fr. Frank Wittouck, SCJ has served in Chicago and Milwaukee as formation director and teacher. He was also a U.S. Army Chaplain for 20 years and a pastor for 1 1 years. He is currently a spiritual director and teaching at our Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin.
