Home Devotion Jesus' Life The Bible Margaret Mary Wounded Side First Friday The Church

After Jesus had shown his wounded side to Thomas, he blessed all those who would believe without seeing. And in his parable of the Last Judgment, he mentioned those who would ask: When have we seen you hungry and not responded? Jesus answered them: When you saw even the least of these hungry, you saw me.

We live long after the disciples who saw Jesus every day. But the eyes of faith do not depend on physical sight. Devotion to the Sacred Heart is one of the gifts God gives to help us "see" more clearly into the mystery of his love.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart helps us see his presence in our hearts, in our homes and in the Eucharist. The Devotion is our inspiration to love our families, to be compassionate and forgiving toward others, and to reach out to those who are hungry.

To know God's love in Jesus and to share it with others is central to the message of the Gospels. There was no change in this message after Saint Margaret Mary; there is no change now after the Second Vatican Council. Ways of explaining our faith may change, forms of prayer may be altered, and certain pictures or statues may become more popular or less popular. But the center, which is the loving Heart of Jesus, remains constant.

When Pope John Paul II made a pilgrimage to Saint Margaret Mary's convent, he stressed that Devotion to the Sacred Heart does not belong to any one time or place. It is at once ancient and modern; familiar, yet new and exciting. In every age, and at every moment of our lives, where our treasure is our hearts will also be.

Today the Sacred Heart of Jesus invites our hearts to be with those who are hungry, hungry both for food and for love. He asks that our hearts be with Thomas when we exclaim "My Lord and my God." The more we respond to him in these ways, the more our treasure will rest securely in his Heart.
