Home Devotion Jesus' Life The Bible Margaret Mary Wounded Side First Friday The Church

This name of "Sacred Heart" that we use for Jesus is not found in the Bible. But the reasons we use this name are woven into the fabric of each inspired poem or story, each prophecy or historical account, that together make up the Sacred Scriptures of our faith.

Before Jesus died, he foretold that he would draw all people to himself when he was lifted up. And, using words from the prophet Isaiah, he spoke of water flowing from his side to satisfy people's thirst. St. John's Gospel emphasizes that after Jesus' death on the cross, his side was pierced with a lance and blood and water flowed out.

On Easter day, Jesus himself directed the attention of his disciples to the Bible when he walked with two of them to Emmaus. He set their hearts burning by explaining the words of the prophets and opened their eyes to the meaning of his resurrection by breaking bread with them. Their loving response was to run all the way back to Jerusalem to share the good news.

This gift of faith in the resurrection was the foundation of the early Christian community, the Church. The remembrances of Jesus-the words he spoke, the stories he told, the miracles he worked-were recorded in the Gospels. The lessons learned from his life were written down in the Epistles and the Book of Revelation.

Today, when we Christians read in Genesis that God created us in his own image and likeness, and when we read in St. John's Gospel that the Word of God became flesh in Jesus, we find our faith confirmed and our hope renewed. We rejoice whenever we hear him call the heavy-burdened to himself and when he teaches us meekness and humility of heart. There we find echoes of Isaiah's assurance that God will never forget us.

We take deeply to heart the new commandment of Jesus to love one another as he loves us, knowing it is firmly rooted in God's revelation through the prophet Micah: be just, love tenderly and walk humbly with your God.
